The world around us are materialist. No ones likes to be poor and everyone wants to be rich. There are too ways of people defining poverty. That is why there are the wealthy and the less wealthy ones.

United Nation’s definition of poverty:

In the Copenhagen World Summit for Social Development (1995), the United Nations adopted a definition of poverty that was heavily influenced by Sen’s conceptualisation.

Poverty has various manifestations, including lack of income and productive resources sufficient to ensure sustainable livelihoods; hunger and malnutrition ill health; limited or lack of access to education and other basic services; increased morbidity and mortality from illness; homelessness and inadequate housing; unsafe environments; and social discrimination and exclusion. It is also characterized by a lack of participation in decision-making and in civil, social and cultural life. … Absolute poverty is a condition characterized by facilities, health, shelter, education and information. It depends not only on income but also on access to social services. (United Nations 1995)

Definition of poverty is not the same for all countries. There are various definition of poverty for each country as each countries’ relatively standard of living are different.
For example in US, the average living standard is higher compared to most European countries. But it is a lot less equal in terns of income distribution because incomes in US are more widely spread out den in European countries. Thus, the poverty situation is worse den poverty in European countries.(for there are more people relatively lower income)
